What ordinary people can do to prevent tragedy

With indictments of Trump and others almost certain soon, I am deeply concerned, not just about mass violence against fellow citizens, but violence against family members and suicides. For people who have been indoctrinated into cults like QAnon, seeing their leaders unmasked will be confusing and traumatic. This may radicalize them further, or it may provide an opportunity for their friends and family to reach out to them before it escalates to tragedy.

25 days after I started investigating QAnon I wrote a Medium piece called “QAnon is Coming for You and Your Family”

Here’s what I wrote on August 27, 2020. I had almost forgotten how shocked I was that no one was talking about this. This is over two years ago and we are barely coming to grips with this now.

Qanon is a death cult preparing for mass violence. It is being run by a group of theocratic fascists, ruthless grifters and literal sociopaths in conjunction with Russian intelligence. Each of these actors is equally hell-bent on creating as much chaos as possible leading up to the election.

For them, like Donald Trump, this election is existential. They will stop at nothing.

It is all of our responsibility to stop the growth of this cult and help the people in it.

We know the identities of the people behind this atrocity. And we know who is helping them amplify their poison. They will be exposed.

In the meantime, we MUST stop the growth of this cult. It is a wildfire rolling up our family and friends and converting them to hateful zombies. This is not an exaggeration.

What I wanted to do about it

I was fortunate to meet Dr. Steven Hassan (@CultExpert) very early on and learned so much from him and his work. He has helped thousands of people out of cults over 45 years since he escaped the Moonies. Steven knows what he’s talking about — as much as anyone on the planet. He has four books, a large website and dozens of videos about what happens to people to get them trapped in a cult, how to maintain a relationship with them, and how to help them find their own way out.

In December 2020, as the QAnon / Big Lie cult was winding up for the insurrection, I had an idea to create a group called “The Thinkin Project” because I thought there would be an opportunity to reach out QAnon victims and their loved ones after the Inauguration. I knew there would be deep confusion and radicalization — and there was.

I won’t go into the details of what happened, but there was a large criminal effort to stop me.

This was the simple idea:

Distill the expertise of people like Dr. Hassan into simple concepts and create content on as many platforms as possible to educate friends and family of QAnon victims.

I still believe this is an idea that can and should be executed. It is, theoretically, easy to operationalize and could help people start to understand their own QAnon+ friends and family better, to spot signs of dangerous escalation, and to help them find their way home.

Why I Shifted Priorities

After the volunteer group I started to put this idea into practice was destroyed by bad actors, I regrouped and decided to focus on exposing the criminals creating the undue influence aka “brainwashing” instead.

The fury of the backlash to helping anyone in QAnon told me that the people who had created QAnon were still in full operation after 1/6. They didn’t want people helped. So, for the last year and a half I have been focusing on exposing the operators, leadership and true purpose of QAnon. Unsurprisingly, the same people who destroyed my volunteer group are the ones who got me banned from Twitter and YouTube because they know I’m right.

Two things need to happen before we can really help people at scale:

1. The criminals waging psychological war on our citizens and indoctrinating them into a death cult must be arrested and prosecuted.

2. The disinformation and Russian propaganda operations poisoning our citizens must be shut down — start with Telegram and Fox.

I believe real progress is being made towards the first goal and there is the potential for serious action on the second if we can retain the House and Senate in the mid-terms.

What Now?

To be perfectly frank, I don’t know. The QAnon+ cult run by Flynn’s network is being radicalized at a frantic, accelerated rate. And they are aiming squarely at destroying the mid-terms. The next steps have everything to do with how well we are prepared for the insurgency we’re facing.

We’re not going to get out of this mess without violence and disruption of some kind. It’s just a matter of what degree and whether we can contain it. I believe we can, but we need the administration, Congress and the DOJ to truly understand what we’re facing, prepare for it, and cut it off at the knees.

After two years of this, once Trump and Flynn are put away, and we are past the worst of the backlash, I would like to again focus more on what can be done to not only heal the oceans of unaddressed trauma left by this this attack, but on making sure this cannot happen here, or anywhere, ever again.

Friends, I am exhausted but also hopeful. I believe we will be ok, but we’re going to all need to suit up in the meantime. This is psychological war and I believe we are nearing a crucial moment that is going to test the limits of many people’s ability to process what’s going on. The aftermath will be brutal and we’re going to need… medics. A third of the country are already casualties. We’re going to need people who understand how this happened and how to help the people who have been hurt — and their loved ones.
