Entropy and Extropy are both natural phenomenon. AI, a digital Singularity and Transhumanism are not. These last three are man made (hence artificial) and so they inherently reflect the flaws of the people who invented them. Also, we should all be aware of the several definitions of the word “Intelligence”. Intelligence can mean Smartness, but it also can simply mean Information. Is AI smart? Or does it just have a lot of information? Does IQ reflect how much information a person has in their brain or the person’s innate ability to use information, or both?
Not a techie and totally disgusted with the amount of fear mongering that is being whipped up by the media. Maybe the fear is justified. I do not really know. I don't have the background, education or experience to make a good assessment of what is really going on so I, like many others, are consequently anxious and worried about the future. A technology which becomes more intelligent than humans cannot be controlled especially given the exponential development of its capacities. We won't know what we don't know until it's too late. We only know a little of what has happened recently. What has happened that we (and they) don't know about? What do they already know that we do not know? It doesn't help that capitalists who don't want regulations (interference with their business practices) are competing with each other to speed up the whole process of acquiring super intelligence; however, regulation cannot prevent what it is not yet aware of nor is it useful after a horrific event has already occurred. It only helps to prevent reoccurrences.
The whole concept of AI or SI removed from the other qualities that make us human is troubling. They do not have emotions. They do not care. They are manipulative. They are goal-oriented and, generally, seem to have little or no ethical restraints. If those constraints are programmed initially, there's no certainty that the SI agent will remain obedient.
The number of agents is troubling, too. If you had a hundred children, could you keep track of all their activities and monitor them so they stay out of trouble? A thousand? A million? A billion?
Musk is evil. He said recently that robots will vastly outnumber humans in the future. ( Right now, about 8 billion people on earth now. So more than 10 billion robots later on? Or does human population eventually shrink? I suspect the latter.). He also said that if human intelligence is, at that time, let's say 1% of collective intelligence, it's hard to imagine that humans will be in control of AI. (So this means that AI will then take the place of capitalist controllers. AI will be their overseers. The humans will be the overseen. Even right now, we the people don't have control of future AI development at all so we are basically giving people who have been proven to be untrustworthy control of our future.)
I know what Musk says doesn't always come to pass but the tech overlords are creating a future they want that we might not. (See Gil Duran's recent book: The Nerd Reich, Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy)
In my opinion, they are all psychopaths and the technology replicates their psychopathy - all "intelligence" and no wisdom, no empathy, no deeper or wider views of humanity except to prolong their own individual selfish lives.
Don't want these people who are in control to be in control.

Thx Jim. I like science fiction stories as much as the next person but, no I don’t buy into the belief that AI will kill us all off in four years. There are unfortunately those who will be alarmed by this and act accordingly. As you say there are people that will use others fears to control them. Glad to hear you don’t use AI to do all your research or write your articles. The old saying ‘garbage in garbage out’ still holds true.
At my son's UCF graduation in May, Peter Lee from Microsoft Science was the commencement speaker. In his speech, he gave the typical pitch that "either it could usher us into a new and enlightened age for mankind, or, it could destroy us all". At no point that I recall did he advocate for passing strict regulations and laws to prevent the supposed doomsday scenario from taking place. In fact, aside from the typical "we need to work to make sure it's used for good" spiel, there wasn't any real elaboration on what we should be doing to prevent that alleged apocalypse.
After the speech, I stated to my family that anybody in an industry who would casually state that the industry that they work for might very well end all life on Earth, and yet still keep working for it instead of devoting every minute of their life to stopping that threat, is either a liar or an asshole...
For all the saying that they will kill us, I hear no stories of just how this might go. Like Pati says, disruptions of networks. Tragedy in hospitals for sure. Remember who generally runs AI is people who either have a billion dollars or want a billion dollars. Thanks for balancing the conversation on “AI will kill us.” Just in time for Halloween.

Honestly, the biggest threat that AI likely poses comes from all the evil, immoral assholes in the world who are already racing to figure out how to exploit that tech to do evil, just as you alluded to. Like Russia, North Korea, or the criminals in our own govt using AI to hack into our FAA and crashing all of the active flights. Or like using it to hack elections to install far-right fascist leaders everywhere...

It’s not hard to imagine how AI could cause massive disruption in many industries, even life threatening in sensitive places like hospitals or research labs. But, aren’t these applications dependent on electricity sources of some type? Seems that a solution for some pending ongoing threat from an AI unit would be to simply deprive it of power. What am I missing?
