The Reflecting Pool fiasco strikes me as more than just a metaphor. It is a perfect reflection of the man who ruined it. The Pool, in its own way, is doing its job.

After draining the Pool, and giving it to a no-bid swimming pool contractor, Trump painted it dark blue, which turned it into an algae swamp. In a rush to fix the problem, they dumped corrosive 12% hydrogen peroxide into the Pool, which is heavier than water and sunk to the bottom, detaching big chunks of the blue epoxy paint.

Now, after ginning up conspiracy theories about leftists sabotaging the Pool, they are arresting people for even putting their hands in the water—because Trump has to blame someone else for everything. I have dubbed this psyop “AlgaeGate.”

This is Trump’s psyche in miniature. He saw something he was jealous of, decided to “fix it,” destroyed it instead, and is now trying to find a way to blame someone else.

While the Reflecting Pool can be cleaned up, many of the other things Trump is trying to “fix” cannot be so easily corrected. He tried to “fix” the threat from Iran, and ended up making them great again instead. Now, at the same moment JD Vance is opening “negotiations” with Iran to stop the fighting, Trump is sabotaging him by threatening to “take over the rest of your country” and “blow the shit out of them.”

We are experiencing a unique historical event—a superpower collapsing with the psychology of its leader. While Trump can’t last much longer—he’s very ill—until he moves on, it’s going to be a long, dark summer. Losing a war to terrorists is a severe narcissistic injury. He will need to take it out on someone else.
