For a year or so in 1990-1, I was a bartender at an Italian restaurant in Takoma Park, MD, right outside DC. Bernie Shaw used to come in every once in a while, sit down at the bar for a beer, and either quietly sit and read the paper or talk to me.
If I recall, he would always have exactly one beer which was $3 — and he would always leave me a five dollar tip. I was 21 years old and having the guy who was in the hotel in Baghdad sitting at my bar was mind-blowing. But he was genuinely the kindest person you could possibly meet, and totally willing to have a conversation with a kid just getting his feet down in the world. This guy was real af.
I can’t imagine he’s happy with what’s happening to the network he put on the map with his coverage of the Iraq war. CNN and John Malone need to understand that turning the network into Fox desecrates the memory of Bernie Shaw and every other actual journalist.
RIP Bernie. Fuck you CNN.
RIP CNN
Chris can Licht my balls. Sorry. Not sorry.
