Fascinating. I'm old enough to remember Eliza, which I guess would be the great grandmother of Grok and chatGPT? I was a teen and my dad had a Radio Shack Tandy TRS 80 I was allowed to use. I remember playing around with Eliza and being disgusted because it did basically the same thing the chat bots are doing today, just less sophisticated.
Really excellent analysis. I’d love to hear more from you about how you define responsible use. I like that you are brutally honest with how stupid a lot of the AI developments are, but also know it’s a tool with some OK uses. I’m in the same camp and tire of the all or nothing discourse about AI. How do we, as skeptics but not refuseniks, define responsible and valuable use of AI though?
I just watched CHAT GPT, I'm not sure if I remember that right except to say it was fucking hilarious. Yet I do understand that without a funny bone in my body I might have fallen for it. Don't get me wrong I can be serious if the occasion and my "instincts" call for it but once the tin foil episode began I realised how delusional you'd have to be to believe any of this. Yes the babyhood segment was weird but if you need to lose weight it might be helpful lol. I can also see that with a mind already on the way out this would be the final stage into full blown psychosis. How to protect people like that, of which there are many, reference donnie little dick, is what the real scientists should be working on. You can't leave debunking and updating to the tech bros as that's the enemy. ALL in my humble opinion of course.
OMG! This is much worse than I thought. Those billionaires blokes are gone, deranged, nuts. AI owning assets and voting? Just what they need to become more powerful and richer and manipulate future elections. Ouch!
Yep. That's the goal. Especially the POWER aspect. They already have more money than they and their offspring can spend in several lifetimes. I wonder what chatbot would say if you asked them what's the goal of chat-bots? lol.
Thank you for the information. I also didn’t understand what was going on with AI. I have avoided it. Now, having read your article, the threat posed by the data centers is even greater than their environmental impact and utility costs. On the other hand, the “push” to develop these data centers where they are not wanted is also more understandable as it comes from those wishing to control the rest of us.
WOTINELL is all this AI s**t? Do these people who interact with these bots not realize they are working with a f**king machine? Why in god's name would anyone ever trust one of these bots? I still have what I consider is a sane distrust of GPS. And why would anyone believe Elon? Does any sane person think he cares about anyone else? He's as narcissistic as T****.
Thanks for the piece: I now have a second discussion point for my sons vis-a-vis my grandchildren (the 10-yr old just got an iPhone for Christmas). The first discussion point was to have the grandchildren look up and learn about Sharyn Alfonsi and her defense of freedom of the press which is under attack.

Unable to find the Zoom link… Looked all over! Are we meeting today?

Hey Jim,
Are you hungry? Could I interest you in a heaping helping of AI-generated slop?

Yeah, Substack is getting absolutely swarmed with it. Right there with you.
