I’m a psychotherapist and I’m like wow this is excellent. TY Jim, again. I’ll reread this until the info is mine and I feel I can implement the strategies.
Thank you, Jim, for this helpful information! Naming something is empowering and establishes a boundary. You did an excellent job describing this process. I like that you described cognitive distortions and examples of this. I’m glad that you described how to effectively reach people in the MAGA movement. We need to remember the long goal and keep our emotions in check. If we can help people to start critically thinking again, that’s what we want.
I find it difficult to keep my emotions in check when the MAGA personality is almost always in an emotional state, with no rationality. If I try just listening, I'm buried in an avalanche of emotional statements that just get repeated over and over. They seem to feel like if they repeat something enough, I will finally come to see its "truth" and "value". I try looking for the kernel of truth in their rants, where I can find at least a thread of agreement, but I find they usually want to just keep the emotions going. Any hint of agreement forces them to stop the self- satisfying rants. I really like this thread and hope that I can apply it successfully.
This should be everywhere! 🙏
