Mr. President
The nation is grateful for your empathy but your job is to protect us. Start issuing Executive Orders and firing people immediately.
Imagine the last two weeks under a second Trump administration. It is not a small thing that we have a First Family that are empathetic human beings who model appropriate behavior. I am grateful for that.
However, the President of the United States has the fate of the world in his hands. He can continue to pretend these are just difficult times that we’ll all get through together if we just keep using the same machinery that got us here in the first place — machinery that has been disabled and corrupted by foreign nation-states and domestic terrorists. But all that will do is ensure our national destruction.
I admire Senator Chris Murphy, who has been valiantly trying to get Republicans to do a Single Fucking Thing About Guns for a decade since Sandy Hook. Sisyphean doesn’t even begin to describe the task he has devoted his career to.
But watching him on TV this morning still begging for scraps and saying he’s willing to vote to “harden schools” if the Republicans will vote for literally anything on gun laws nearly broke me. When he was asked about high-capacity magazines, which are only used to commit massacres like Buffalo and Uvalde, he indicated that he doesn’t see that on the table.
The truth is this is Kabuki theater run by the man who has done more to destroy the ability of the Legislative Branch to function than anyone in history, Mitch McConnell. Nothing will happen. No laws will be passed. And Chris Murphy will be left again with nothing but devastated constituents until the next massacre happens.
At the same time, SCOTUS is literally an arm of a tiny christo-fascist cult that wants to actualize the Handmaid’s Tale and will never, ever vote to uphold any gun restrictions. During his reign, Trump installed hundreds of anti-democratic judges willing to do things like let January 6th terrorists get away with it.
The President of the United States is in a unique situation, and an extremely difficult one. To call this a “constitutional crisis” is a vast understatement. Biden must use the full power of the Branch he still controls, the Executive, to combat and correct the corruption of the other two Branches in order to protect the American people.
Mr. President, it’s your job.
Biden needs to start issuing Executive Orders to take action. He needs to start playing the game by the rules that exist, not the ones he got used to years ago.
He should issue EOs on gun laws, women’s rights, disinformation, voting rights and anything else that is endangering American citizens’ lives or Constitutional rights. Obviously, these orders will be challenged in the courts. Good.
Biden has the power to put the same kind of pressure on our adversaries as they are putting on us. Hit them on as many levels as possible at once. He must stop playing defense. Make the fascists defend themselves.
Additionally, Biden must put pressure on the DOJ to start making arrests. I do not fucking care what the norms are. I do not care about the customary idea that DOJ should be totally independent. That is a relic, a powdered wig, not a law. Take the wig off, Joe. Tell Merrick Garland to start making arrests and indictments or replace him.
Get rid of Federalist Society member Christopher Wray who oversaw the abject failure of the FBI to predict or prevent the insurrection, despite ordinary citizens like me being able to see exactly what would happen. POTUS must fire him and put in someone who will actually do investigations and dismantle these organized criminal conspiracies publicly attacking our citizens. What is Sally Yates up to?
We appreciate that you feel our pain, Mr. President. Now do something about it. 🇺🇸
Such common sense made oh so painful because it will not be taken.
This fetish with the Constitution as though it were holy writ chaps me raw. FFS, these "constitutional orginalists" are the Amish of politics. Sure you can get from here to there in a horse and buggy...if here isn't too far from there and the terrain is navigable. The fact that the Constitution doesn't include a MANDATE that it be regularly reviewed and revised top to bottom is all you need to know about how fundamentally flawed it is. Geezus, these people.
