People were buying cars, houses, it was a good life for all, etc. The steel mills were friendly, paid good wages without resentment, a far cry from big corps later on. Population was about half black, half white. During that time I could not report any racial problems of any kind (part of my job). People in unions were union brothers first and foremost, their enemies were not racially realized, their enemies were corporate. Unions dissolved racist tendencies. Unions disolve racial tensions. Want a racially divided population, destroy unions. Years later, Gary had severe racial tensions. This was after unions were destroyed by corporations and politicians like Reagan and "nafta" Clinton.
