Some basic things I resolve to fight for in the New Year

I want to wish everyone, despite everything we’ve been through together, and the deep challenges we have in front of us, a Happy New Year. It may be a cliché, but we all have something to be grateful for. This is a good time to remember that.

I don’t do standard New Year’s resolutions because, for me at least, it’s historically just a set up for failure. However, here are some things I resolve to promote and defend this year, and every year thereafter.

Truth. There was a time when telling the truth mattered. I resolve to defend it because I want my grandchildren to live in a world where liars are rejected, not celebrated.

Empathy. The enemy’s kryptonite. Demonstrating that you care about others is a righteous act of rebellion these days. I will not give up my humanity for anyone.

Decency. Treat people with respect until they prove they don’t deserve it. Then don’t be afraid to tell them why. Be kind, but don’t be a doormat.

Courage. Fear is the enemy’s greatest weapon. Never let fear stop you from doing the right thing. Ever. Courage is a muscle. You exercise it, or lose it.

Patriotism. Loving your country is not a spectator sport. You fight for it, or you don’t.

Forgiveness. The toughest of all. Nevertheless, when all of this is over — a long time from now — we will all need a lot of it.

I hope you and yours have some time together where all of these things are taken for granted, where you don’t have to worry about basic human goodness or kindness. Cherish and remember those moments. In the marathon to come, you will need them.
