Thanksgiving Was a Civil War Holiday
Lincoln proclaimed it in 1863 as a way to renew American unity
Happy Thanksgiving, friends. I have many things to be grateful for, including all of you who have supported me along this journey, my friends who have literally kept me alive, and my family who is the reason I do this in the first place.
Thank you, all.
This Thanksgiving does seem especially ironic, however. It’s a holiday that was proclaimed during the Civil War by Abraham Lincoln, a Republican who fought a war to prevent racist Southern oligarchs from seizing power.
I can only imagine Lincoln’s horror if he saw that his party had been hijacked by a racist South African oligarch — while the opposition party did nothing to prevent it from seizing power and destroying the Constitution.
The reality is that we are already in a civil war. So far it has been a one-sided attack, an increasingly radical insurgency sabotaging and brainwashing the nation into its racist, misogynistic, illiberal worldview — while the other side tries to appease it.
The time for appeasement is over.
For everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving, I wish you a warm holiday with those you love. In these perilous times, with a criminal regime coming into power, it is more important than ever to strengthen those bonds, to pull your true friends close, and to renew your love of family. You will need them. And they will need you.
We can get through this as a stronger, more perfect Union, but first we must win the Second Civil War. 🇺🇸
