The Worst Movie Plot

Wait, you’re telling me a retired general, a foreign dictator, the world’s richest man, and the Supreme Court are conspiring to end American democracy?

Every once in a while you just have to step back and think: “This is fucking ridiculous.”

If this were a movie pitch, it would not make it past the Giggle Test. Trust me on this. I’ve been in lots of them.

Nevertheless, we find ourselves in the most bizarre and dangerous real-life movie plot since the Civil War. Like then, we are in a clear existential conflict between the forces of fascism & slavery, and those who promote freedom — Good Guys vs. Bad Guys, if you will — with another fragile presidential election as the battleground, 160 years later.

The “Bad Guys,” ie. the forces aligned against the continued operation of the U.S. federal government as a functioning democracy, are very, very formidable. They include some of the richest people in the world, including Elon Musk and the PayPal Mafia, a large christofascist paramilitary death cult manipulated by retired 3-star general Mike Flynn, genocidal Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and the Supreme Court of the United States. A strange set of bedfellows, to say the least.

To make things weirder, the current front man for the Bad Guys, Donald Trump, is a disintegrating criminal rapist who may be sentenced to prison time in two weeks, and already had one attempt made on his life. Of course, this creates an extremely unstable situation, which is the perfect scenario for escalating drama.

Now, are the Bad Guys conspiring in a dark room or an encrypted Telegram channel somewhere? Of course not. But the alignment of their intentions, to decimate the Constitution of the United States and install a theocratic fascist state friendly to Vladimir Putin, is extremely clear. They’re cooperating in public. It’s not hidden. At all. The basic plot, pun intended, is obvious.

But the “Good Guys” are also powerful. They include the Executive Branch of the government, including the military, the clear majority of the American people, and a brilliant new leader in Kamala Harris, who appears to be poised to win the political part of the election.

However, we are no longer in a political contest. We are in a war, albeit mostly non-kinetic, so far — and this war movie has not reached its climax yet. As I’ve warned for many months, the strategy to cheat in 2024 is very clear. The Bad Guys have already sown doubts about the upcoming election, continue to insist the 2020 election — which was not close — was stolen, and have put the legal machinery in place to challenge numerous swing states based on manufactured claims of fraud and interference.

The conflict is inevitable. There is going to be a war over this election. The movie is not going to pause for us to get popcorn. And we don’t have the (full) script yet.

However, we do get a vote. We can change whether this movie has (another) sequel, or if the Bad Guys get their wish and make this The Last American Movie.

As with all entertainment, the critical element to generating emotion and drama is timing. Get it wrong and your scene will end in a thud. Get it right, and you get a Very Exciting Ending. We don’t want that. We want this movie to end in a non-plot twist — that nothing dramatic happens and we just move calmly on to the Harris Administration. Sadly, a highly unlikely outcome.

Make America Normal Again

The Bad Guys are doing everything they can to delay the climax of the movie as long as possible. When Mike Flynn pled the Fifth to the question of whether he supports the peaceful transition of power to the January 6th Committee, he was being very clear about his intentions. Like his Bad Guy allies, he doesn’t want peace. He wants a conflict. And he wants it to be violent.

Elon Musk, the on-and-off Richest Man, has completely broken any silly mirage that he is not fully on board Team Bad Guys. His behavior over the last few days, including showing a badly-rendered Kamala Harris in a “Communist” outfit to his nearly 200 million “followers,” has been nothing short of obscene. His family history of white supremacy and his own messianic narcissism are on stark, terrifying display. How he intends to further weaponize the former Twitter in the next several months can only be imagined, but we know that there is no bottom.

Let’s break this down to the most basic movie trope. We on a train representing America. There is a ticking time bomb under us. There are three possible outcomes depending on the timing of the film’s climax.

1. We defuse the bomb and live another day.

2. We jump off the train in the nick of time. We’re alive but injured, and the train is badly damaged.

3. We all explode.

The sooner we have the conflict, the less dangerous it is, and the less dramatic. But most people, especially those in power are conflict-averse. They feel that by delaying a fight, it’s automatically better. But that’s just cowardice and worse, it may be suicidal.

What we need is courage, by our elected officials, and our corporate press, to have the conflict we must have now, not later.

The Supreme Court is the nuclear option that has already been taken. Unless we prevent them from taking the bench, stealing our vote, and causing a grave constitutional crisis after the election, we’re just waiting for that bomb to tick down to zero. We must defuse it. Now.
