Although I’m never a man nor a gay man, I recall the 1970 and 80’s in NY. The clubs by the river. The baths. Then aids. It’s not a culture known for being kind or anything like the other gay culture that exists as families and married, committed life we see now. Great questions. And, just another er comment on the subject, I think as terrible as men can be to women, they can be even worse to men.
I lived in the Bay area in the late 80's and early 90's. Lived in santa Cruz, spent weekends in the city (San Francisco) including the Castro, had gay friends, even attended the wedding of a gay priest, knew transsexuals as friends, old SDS, includiing Weathermen (they were actually two lesbians).
Had lunch with Angela Davis, along with 7 other members of the union, set up the auditorium for a speech by Gloria Steinem
And here is the kicker, before I moved to Santa Cruz, I was a right wing extremist.
It was the move to Santa Cruz, what they call in AA a geographic, that resulted in my change of attitude, as I met and was befriended by people whom I had otherwise deplored.
Like any culture there are variations of a theme., whether they are "unkind" is something else, BDSM is mostly a straight affliction. To my knowledge gays aren't into BDSM, but straight males certainly are.

I would go to the Blue Lagoon or on occasion to a gay bar in Salinas to watch "her" act, and from time to time, met "straight" males, usually traveling salesmen, trolling for a gay hook up, mostly for blow jobs, which enabled them to think that they weren't gay.
I had many attempts to pick me up,,by me a drink, I was in recovery and only drank Callistoga. a carbonated water. That never bothered me, I would tell them that I was straight and not at all interested in the penis, and that would be that, then from then on some interesting conversations.
