Fabulous article, as always. We are our brains. I have always thought humans are like little robots controlled by our brains. We are not as in control as we like to think! I did several tv documentaries on the brain. It's one of my favorite subjects. I have meditated for decades and found it amazingly helpful. I force myself to think pleasant thoughts and visualize pretty pictures. Over time, this will actually rewire your brain to help alleviate depression, PTSD, etc. It's worked fairly well for me.

What you are describing is a hard-wired physiological route of the tribal brain. The same brain that is racist, sexist, misogynist. The brain that self-reinforces barely conscious prejudices. Educating people about how their internal brain technology works and how they are being manipulated by technology is crucial. Doing something effective about the deceit and manipulation even more crucial. Jessica Denson was captivated by FOX for EIGHT YEARS! She is completing a memoir. It would make a significant impact on FOX viewers if her memoir could be made into a high-quality documentary. We also need to start our own non-profit, fact-based media companies and drive the monopolists out of the industry. Bezos started small.

Yes Nancy, Fox Fucking News has destroyed the minds of millions of American citizens over the course of its almost 3 decades of deceit. Their 24/7 intentional lies, hate and fear mongering, projection, indoctrination, and radicalization has damaged/destroyed families, friendships, and marriages. Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan should be investigated and tried for treason if we ever regain power in our country.

What a lot of people need to realize is that Fox, and now its many copycat cohorts in crime, has not only indoctrinated and radicalized regular citizens, but also Republican (and some Democrat ---- Fetterman) politicians, judges, law enforcement officers, military members, government officials, church leaders, and even sitting Supreme Court justices. By spending decades promoting itself as the "conservative" alternative to mainstream "news", they succeeded in manipulating people who identified as conservative into believing that any other news was "liberal". Then they hammer their victims with 24/7/365 insinuations and sometimes overt statements like "the liberal news won't tell you this", or "the fake news media", to program them into automatically distrusting anything they hear anywhere else.

Hell, I could drone on about my absolute, seething fucking abhorrence for Fox and the rest of the conservative propaganda machine, but I'm sure you're already aware of all of this anyhow. I can just never miss an opportunity to unleash on just how sinister and destructive that network truly is.

In case you or others haven't seen her amazing work, you should check out Decoding Fox News here on Substack. Juliet watches Fox propaganda all week, every week, and then reports on their most recent lies, omissions, deflections, hate, and fear mongering. Her work may one day be a huge source of evidence useful for proving that the network intentionally harmed our citizens and our national security. I will have to check out Jessica Denson's work, thanks...

I live on Vancouver Island, and it bothers me greatly that Fox leaks into our media sphere via cable subscriptions and the internet. To me it's pure fucking evil.

Yeah, the right-wing propaganda has managed to infect every country, to varying degrees, especially thanks to social media. I thought you all had a ban on Fox, at least on cable, or was I misinformed on that?

Obviously that wouldn't stop access from the internet, but it would be more than we've got here. Our country really shit the bed on guarding against this type of blatant propaganda…

Fox comes in some of the cable subscription packages. We do have Canadian content broadcasting standards, hate speech laws, and way less permissive defamation laws. Journalists are held to a higher standard than the average person. That's why we are so polite. :)

Interesting. So Fox found a way to slip in there. Do the standards not apply to them since they're not technically broadcasting from Canada? Or do they have local Fox affiliates that broadcast in your country too?

I appreciate your knowledge on this because I have very little with regards to your country's laws pertaining to the news media. Hopefully, when the day finally comes that we end this regime, it will be helpful to know what other countries have done to help tackle this type of blatant propaganda…

The Cancon rules (Canadian content) don't apply to US content. We get Fox on cable networks and online, but we get to watch South Park as well :). The Internet is so porous you can't really stop it or police it. I watch a bunch of Progressive YouTube channels such as Miedas Touch, Kyle Kulinski, I've Had It, Hysteria, Heather Cox Richardson, Mehdi Hasan, Brian Tyler Cohen, Mark Thompson, Robert Reich, etc. They roast Fox all the time. I can't believe how toxic Fox is, same goes for the right-wing podcasting mercenaries. No wonder a third of your country has brain damage. I'm a bleeding heart progressive, I love Bernie and AOC. The progressive wing of the Democratic Party needs to have their Tea Party moment and primary the Corporate wing out of existence, then some meaningful reforms will happen. I hope that's where all this insanity is leading. Cheers. :)

Yes. Thanks for your comment. I will check out Juliet, but I'm not sure how much of that I could truly take. I've said via comments on Jim's articles more than once that a species cannot survive with faulty information. Think of the navigational systems of bees being manipulated so they are unable to gather pollen. FOX is a crime against humanity in my opinion.

If you know of any good organizations working on trying to deal with them, please let me know. Jessica's group visited FOX and other commercial television network stations earlier this year. They really don't care that protesters show up occasionally. Serious legislation is going to be required and that's going to have to come from grassroots. From my perspective, the best thing is to drive them out of business by growing and supporting alternative fact-based media outlets and people like Jim and others who are on the frontlines. Local groups that could meet to discuss this problem and brainstorm ways to build independent, local/state media would also be good.

I fully agree that it is extremely difficult to witness all the lies and manipulation from propaganda outlets like Fox. What I like about her Decoding Fox News Substack is that she does all the watching for us, then she gives summaries. Most importantly, in my opinion at least, her massive collection of their lies could be valuable down the line.

There's also a nonprofit called Free Press that does great work fighting against this media consolidation, the attacks against truth, in addition to currently working to fund and grow genuine, independent journalism. I'll put the link below in case you want to check them out...

I agree and actually have some ideas for legislation that could help get the media to shape up. I call it DEMAND REAL JOURNALISM and in essence, it involves legislation to set up a system where professional journalists are licensed and regulated, like doctors or lawyers. Over time, this would create a group that's trustworthy. The right purposely destroyed the credibility of the media by labeling it liberal back in the 80s. That lie worked really well, and most people still believe it today.

In the days before trump, Fox Skews covered a shark attack practically every day, along with violent crime. They continue to be masters at that, but I’ve noticed that even Daily Beast is now covering one or two plane crashes or plane mishaps daily. Thanks for elaborating on the purposes and effects.

I’m grateful I never listened to enough of the Trump/MAGA propaganda to become traumatized by it. I’m beginning to wonder though if reading too much about Trump could be psychologically hurting me. I will be mindful to limit my daily consumption. Trump and his toxic movement is damaging to all of us to some degree. We must hold this evil man and his enablers and fellow scammers, including his family members, accountable after he and they are out of power.

I’m pretty sure being constantly aware of this level of evil has harmed me psychologically and physically. But I can only consider the damage as battle wounds. There is no turning away. We all are doing our part, even if it is only to stay aware. Hang in there.

Regarding PTSD, it used to be called "Shell-shock!" I think calling it Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has softened the language around this so that they can make it seem less violent. Less relevant to warriors. Like the killing of civilians is now termed as "Collateral damage", we continue to let trump get away with things because we've made chaos appear a natural order of how the world works. It's not of course but people now accept Shell-shock and Collateral damage as normal.
