Mastodon is trending because Twitter is being transformed into a neo-nazi psyop by a pro-Putin chaos agent with 250 billion dollars.
Mastodon is a decentralized Twitter-like environment that takes some getting used to but has a lot more promise than most of the alternatives. I’m not fully convinced about it yet, but at least Mastodon has an interesting, believable backstory, has been around for six years, and so far seems reasonably safe to use.
Why choose Mastodon? Because it's decentralized and open-source, it can't be sold and won't go bankrupt. It respects your privacy and gives control over the network to the people. It's a product on top of a protocol, the way Twitter should have been.
The downside is that with a lot of new traffic it only works like 25% of the time. Anyway worth a try. If you want to give it a shot, please follow me. I’ll follow back.

Even with Mastodon, someone ends up in charge of yet another silo.
I'm working on a prosocial non-profit open-source alternative that keeps power with the individual instead of with the network owner. I'd love help or feedback: www.positivesum.net.
