I've long felt that "occult" and "magik" is all about the art of psychological manipulation and control. To be fair a lot of mainstream religion is also, which is why the church is so hostile to occultism: they don't want the competition. I think that is also why it has so often been associated with fascistic/authoritarian movements. If only the human race could get beyond magical thinking, we'd be so much better off. As Voltaire (I think) said, "Truly, whoever can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."
