Punchcards. Brings back memories. In the late 60s, my mother worked for the school district and they decided to computerize the entire library system. Four high schools and all the feeder schools. She was in charge. I worked for her one summer. But the boxes of punchcards! It was like magic. Those supplied the card catalog cards and all the labels for the books. I got to check the printing and process the books and make sure they werea shipped to the right school.
I remember the scene in Hidden Figures where she shows the guys how to use the punchcards in the computers.
Thank you, Jim. I wish you could reach our representatives in Washington and the national media. The tech bros are kissing up to megalomaniac Trump with promises of riches and power while delivering us into a White Nationalist Technocracy.
I'm relieved to be convinced that AI isn't going to kill us but and it's a big but. Governments are going to be stripped us to the bare bones and will no longer be able to support it's citizens. We are in danger of making the Super rich richer and the rest of humanity much much poorer. Also Can I ask that if a technology company needs all this energy to run it it why are they not having to pay for it? I've heard that the peoples energy bills will rise to support this. It's not only that because the people living near these data processing "farms" are going crazy with the 24/7 noise. It strikes me that we're going to need more therapists in the world than we currently have lol.
When a factory runs it's machines it pays the electric bill why aren't the technology companies subject to the same rules? I'm not a nerd like you so these questions may sound simplistic. I'm one of those people that still adds 2 plus 2 equals 4! Also, here in Britain we have already introduced AI into our National Health System (NHS) and the users are saying that it's not working as advertised so they are mostly doing things the old way. If they say sorry we're not buying it so take it away the techies say that they can't disassemble the "core" data collection part? Which means to my simplistic brain that they still can keep collecting personal private data to use it as they wish at some future time and also sell it on maybe? In the UK we are protesting governments use of tech lobbyists to push their product onto us. How else can we make are concerns known to those who don't listen to anyone but the big donors these days. "Big money donors," that's an America import idea we could have done without. Sigh...

Thanks for the history.
