They are high density polymers (HCPs) like lead in paint. HCPs may appear to hold lead but contain relatively tiny amounts of lead when exposed to light.
The first is commonly found in glass, including at high intensities such as near light sources and in paint like ceramic. Lead particles are commonly also found on wood and glass. These particles occur in about three quarters of objects that people do not see. HCPs are formed because of the concentration of lead atoms and not because of the surface contamination associated with paint. HCPs can cause lead to form when exposed to light.
"It's a little bit of a mystery," the captain said. "The other part of our job is to find those lead particles, so if any lead is present we need to find out what is behind it, and to look at how it has formed and what caused it. We also need to look at what the individual lead particles are involved in, their properties and the kinds of materials they contain."
The team is looking for what's behind the lead and how many other lead particles it has formed.
