Gellman describes watching his phone being hacked in his book Dark Mirror. He describes it with amazing writing talent. Watching your computer or device being hacked makes one a witness and victim to a crime at the same time. It can cause a brain state called freeze in the PTSD spectrum.
Think of deer caught in the headlights that just stand there, seemingly unable to move or do anything. I am familiar with it due to childhood abuse. Running away made it worse for me as did fighting back (with words mostly.) So I had to endure. There are many situations in which I still freeze. One time was when a fellow passenger on a shuttle bus had his pelvis right up against my behind. I couldn't do a damn thing... I couldn't think straight. It was only after getting off at the next stop I was able to think of things I should have done.
