The “Good News”: Is Leo XIV a Sign of a World Getting Tired of MAGA?
The global reaction to the Trump regime’s fascist clown show just got much more interesting.
Today, the Cardinals at the Vatican conclave chose a new pope. They did it with relatively few ballots, and they chose someone few really expected.
As an atheist, by definition I have no “horse” in this race. But as someone who has studied religion extensively in my work, who has both Christian and Jewish family, I have grown to understand and respect religion’s place in the world, regardless of my personal belief system. The choice of a pope is very, very important.
Three months ago, Dr. Robert Prevost, now Holy Father for 1.4 billion Catholics, tweeted this, a direct shot at JD Vance.
Of course, about three weeks ago, JD Vance visited Pope Francis and twelve hours later Pope Francis was dead.

I have written extensively about JD Vance, and how his entire persona, including his “faith,” is a creation of Peter Thiel, a man I have quite seriously described as the Antichrist. So, this choice of pope seems—and I cannot stress enough that we don’t know until he actually takes action—to be a condemnation of the Trump regime, and the genocidal, theocratic goals of the PayPal Mafia and their collaborators in the extremist Catholic cults Opus Dei and Knights of Malta.

At first blush, the reaction from the American right is quite, shall we say, guarded. Charlie Kirk, effectively leader of the American Hitler Youth as President of Turning Point USA, wonders if Pope Leo XIV is a “globalist installed to counter Trump.”
Well, it’s hard to imagine Trump doing anything more antagonistic to the Church than posting a picture of himself as the Pope.
There is another American Catholic named Leo, of course—Opus Dei and Knight of Malta Leonard, whose Federalist Society has chosen 6 of 9 SCOTUS Justices. This is a pretty strong sign that the Church is not interested in theocracy in America. Again, we shall see whether the Court gets the message.
Just as the new pope was being announced with white smoke, the GOP Senate did a remarkable thing. They turned down Mike Flynn’s old friend, Russian state TV contributor and insurrectionist lunatic Ed Martin, to be US Attorney for DC. Thom Tillis, apparently, was the deciding vote. Again, we shall see who Trump replaces him with, but this is also good news. Ed Martin is seriously, uh… nuts.
This also seems to be bad news for Mike Flynn’s stated goal to be National Security Advisor again. It’s hardly a vote of confidence that Flynn’s appointment would go well, even though NSA does not require Senate confirmation.
Mike Flynn’s old friend Kash Patel, preposterously installed as FBI Director, has been on the Hill getting grilled by Democratic Members of Congress. Here is Rep. Madeline Dean completely dismantling Patel yesterday, while he squirms and fights back with the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old boy. His performance in the Senate today is equally embarrassing.
I am, above all, no Pollyanna, but I also welcome and celebrate good news when we get it. While I’m not a follower of the “Good News” of Jesus Christ myself, I do believe the Catholic Church and the Pope can give Christians important guidance. And while I’m hardly a believer in the US Congress right now, it’s good too see a tiny sliver of resistance from the bowels of the “deep state.”
I know that the world can seem like it’s inexorably moving towards the dark, but that is an illusion. History is not written yet, nor are the winners chosen. For my part, I choose hope. Despite the nature of my work, and the evil I’ve been exposed to in the process, I’m not doing this to lose.
